IESC/Geekcorps Fall 2005 Update & Call for Volunteers

First - thank you for your interest in Geekcorps. It’s probably been a while since you added your name to our email list, and even longer since we wrote, but don’t think we’ve forgotten about you. We’ve just been busy with all our 2005 projects and developing new ones that we hope will keep you interested in Geekcorps, and rushing to apply to volunteer in 2006.

In 2005, we’ve had great success in Mali. Geekcorps Mali not only empowered community radio station with Internet connectivity, we made technological leaps in the process. From our famous BottleNet, which was featured in Wired Magazine, to Kunnafonix, a Linux live CD in Bambara, to our solar powered radio station computers out past Timbuktu, we’re at the cutting edge intersection of technology and development.

Check out the Geekcorps Mali website.

Geekcorps is more than Mali, though. We’ve designed a software integration to ease transportation bottlenecks in East Africa, coordinated a “Who’s Who” of Sudanese Diaspora for the Government of Southern Sudan, and developed training courses that aim to make technology fun, exciting and, most importantly, profitable for micro entrepreneurs worldwide.

For 2006, we’re looking to expand our reach, both globally and technologically. To do so, we need your help. We need you to register via our website. Register even if you don’t think you could volunteer in 2006, or not sure if your skills are relevant to our work. Plans change, projects come up, and we are always looking for advisors who can lend a hand or and ear - without ever leaving home.

We’re already starting to search for 2006 volunteers and you don’t want to miss out on the adventure of a lifetime. Our wish list of volunteer skill sets includes software developers, business consultants, and engineers of all types. French fluency and training experience are always a big plus too.

Details on who we’re looking for.

Oh, and if you’ve already registered with us before - thanks!! But, be sure to update your profile if your skills and/or contact information has changed. If your job changes, be sure to let us know - current resumes and CVs are vital to our matching your talents to Geekcorps opportunities.

Thanks again for your support,
The Geekcorps team
