Alima Traore

With our week-long “training of the trainers” (TOT), we accomplished two goals: reward those radio staff who had put effort into updating their Web sites, by asking them to train their peers, and train a group of novices on the basics of Web site management.
Ms. Alima Traore, one of our trainers, stood out in the TOT sessions, not only because she was the only woman, but because she demanded respect from her students and seemed determined to fill their heads with as much information as possible during her half-day session — and more.
Ms. Traore’s interest in her station’s web site was, as we had hoped, reinvigorated by the training. One afternoon, two weeks after the TOT, she mentioned casually that she was leading a training session at her station like the one she had just taught at the TOT. We were stunned and delighted; in our closing ceremony, we had said that we hoped the training wouldn’t end that day, that it would continue back in the trainers’ communities. We’d spoken in abstractions, but already, Ms. Traore had independently organized an evening class for her peers, carrying on the learning.
