moulin logoAfter months of hard work, Geekcorps Mali is extremely proud to announce the release moulin - the offline Wikipedia!

moulin, French for windmill, is Geekcorps’ attempt to improve the access to basic information and reference material in developing countries by making it possible to access Wikipedia, the world’s largest, free encyclopedia, offline.

Basically, moulin is a fully interactive, offline version of the entire Wikipedia (without pictures) on a CD! The initial French version consists of the entire French Wikipedia: 404,903 articles all fitting on an ISO 554MBs big.

moulin, the brainchild of Geekcorps volunteers Frédéric Renet and Renaud Gaudin, started off as a side project of Geekcorps’ Last Mile Initiative. Frédéric and Renaud quickly developed an initial prototype of the system to run on a Nokia 770. Excited by the potential of making Wikipedia more widely accessible, Renaud volunteered for a second tour with Geekcorps and developed the current version of moulin which can be run off a CD.

We are seeking implementation partners and native Spanish, Portugese, German and Chinese speakers who can help us with the release of those versions. If you are interested in helping or helping to distribute our product please email info@moulinwiki.org
