Stephane on antenna tower, MaliIn celebration of the 78th Anniversary of World Amateur Radio Day, we’d like to remind radio techies everywhere of a great way to get involved in the world around us: Geekcorps!

Geekcorps has an innovative community radio project in Mali where geeks are developing sustainable telecommunication-based business models for the “last mile”—people in rural Mali without access to basic information or communication services. See the impacts of our most recent community radio project in Mali.

You too can participate in this program!

Geekcorps needs radio technicians and radio content experts for summer and fall 2007 assignments focusing on community radio. Volunteers will spend a substantial portion of their time in rural areas of developing countries, introducing, installing, and training on technologies that afford greater access to information.

All volunteers must be able to work well with others and innovate with minimal technical equipment in a developing country. Assignments usually last about three months, working on multiple projects with local counterparts and teaching small groups in a hands-on setting. More volunteers will be needed in winter 2007-08 to continue the project.

Geekcorps can offer great benefits besides that warm & fuzzy feeling from doing good. International airfare, lodging, decent living stipend, and dedicated in-country staff are provided. Daily challenges and rewards are guaranteed.

If you have at least 3-5 years of professional experience in radio station management or electrical engineering, you could be a Geekcorps volunteer in our Community Radio Projects.

Knowledge of the following would be especially helpful:

  • Broadcast journalism
  • Electrical engineering
  • Radio transmission technology (AM & FM)
  • Community radio management
  • Experience managing and collaborating with others
  • Proficiency in French or Spanish

If you have 3-5 years of professional experience with the skills listed above, plus some experience with training, mentoring, or leadership, we want to hear from you!
