Geekcorps Advises the AVOIR Network

29 May 2007 in News, DFI by Wayan Vota

AVOIRIESC Geekcorps Director Wayan Vota is participating in an AVOIR strategy meeting in Nairobi Kenya this week. He is following up on previous Geekcorps volunteer engagements with the African Virtual Open Initiatives and Resources (AVOIR).

Ryan Whitney, Adrian “Open Source Guy” Woodhead, and Jessie Bhangoo offered technical assistance in software development, deployment, and support to the Free Software Innovation Unit of the University of Western Cape.

AVOIR’s mission is capacity building in Software Engineering in Africa through the Development, Deployment and Support of Free and Open Source Software. AVOIR should be an engine for an African Free and Open Source Software Development industry.

Geekcorps is offering technical support to the AVOIR Network to increase its ability to develop commercial Free and Open Source software (FOSS) based around the Chisimba Framework and its related modules. Geekcorps activities with AVOIR are part of the Digital Freedom Initiative, funded by USAID.

If you are a software business analyst or project manager with significant FOSS experience, and a desire to increase software development capacity in Africa, register with Geekcorps to be considered for future volunteer assignments focused on AVOIR.
