IESC Geekcorps promotes economic growth in the developing world by sending highly skilled technology volunteers to teach communities how use innovative and affordable information and communication technologies (ICT’s) to solve development problems.
The goal of the Geekcorps program in Mali, West Africa, is to bring technology solutions to community radio stations in Mali, to increase the quality of information they have at their disposal, and to encourage sharing of information and programs between the radio stations. Due to its success, Geekcorps Mali has an additional portfolio of projects and partners that include SchoolNet, Africare, and the University of Bamako.
Geekcorps is currently seeking a passionate, experienced, and motivated technology expert and advocate to manage Geekcorps Mali projects and volunteers, and assist in developing new projects and expanding Geekcorps into new technologies and countries.
Position Description:
The Geekcorps Mali Program Manager is a fulltime position, based in Bamako, Mali, that will report to the Vice President of Field Operations. Supported by the IESC Geekcorps staff in Washington, DC, this position will be responsible for implementing viable technology solutions at community radio stations in Mali, to increase the quality of information they have at their disposal, and to encourage sharing of information and programs between the radio stations. In addition, the Program Manager will be responsible for developing and providing a variety of technology services to USAID partners in Mali.
Required skills:
Technology Leadership: a deep knowledge and understanding of information and communication technologies, especially radio broadcasting, wireless communication, and Free and Open Source technologies such as:
- Radio broadcast technology (FM / HAM)
- Basic electrical engineering skills and electrical calculations
- Linux Administration skills (Apache, SMTP, Proxy Server, etc)
- Basic web programming skills (PHP, HTML, Javascript)
- Familiarity with configuring routers, hubs, switches, network printing
Project Management: strong project management experience managing multiple projects and staff, familiarity with USAID grants and administration, and advanced French verbal and written language skills to manage a local team completely in French. Project management tasks include:
- Develop program strategy and annual work plans for multiple partner ICT projects
- Represent projects to USAID, implementing partners, and other international donor programs
- Prepare monthly and quarterly internal and USAID reports and budgets.
- Manage local staff and international volunteers in a challenging work environment, across diverse cultures in remote locations
Program Development: the ability to identify and develop winning ICT-based project proposals for USAID and other external funders that expand Geekcorps programs into new areas and new countries. Beneficial qualities would be:
- A proven track record of successful grant and contract development
- Intimate knowledge of the USAID request for proposals process
- The willingness to travel across Africa in support of proposal submissions
