Geekcorps Receives Tech Museum Award

Tech Museum Awards TrophyGeekcorps is one of 25 Tech Laureates who received a Tech Museum Award on November 15. The awards recognize “the best of those who are utilizing innovative technology solutions to address the most urgent critical issues facing our planet.” Geekcorps received an award in the Economic Development category for its work on the Desert PC in remote Bourem Inaly, Mali.

The Geekcorps CanTV

Turning On New CanTVIn the village of Bourem Inaly, Mali there are over 120 television sets powered by 12-volt car batteries, but there is almost nothing to watch. With its CanTV project, Geekcorps has helped the local radio station stream video content to the local community over WiFi. The radio station, which rents these units out, benefits from a new monthly revenue stream while the villagers benefit with an improved source of news and entertainment.

PICTA opens first training center in Lebanon

30th October 2006

Middle East business resource AME Info reported on Wednesday, October 25, that “the PCA ICT Academy [PICTA], an ICT development project which aims to transform the lives of thousands of families throughout Lebanon, announced the opening of a training and technology centre in Baalbek.” PCA ICT Academy is a collaborative effort among multiple companies and NGOs, including IESC, Intel, MercyCorps, Cisco, Microsoft, UNDP and CA.

Geekcorps Director to lead USINFO webchat

Join Geekcorps Director Wayan Vota next Wednesday, October 25, at 10:00 a.m., when he leads a USINFO webchat about “making technology accessible to people living in some of the least developed parts of the globe.” In particular he will talk about how IESC Geekcorps has adapted technology and transferred technology skills to people in developing countries.

USINFO, a program of the U.S. Department of State, delivers information about current U.S. foreign policy and about American life and culture.

IESC offers technical assistance in Lebanon
